Next Year’s Song Review

PANGEA / NOVEMBER 16; JAZZ FORUM / NOVEMBER 20

A new name to most, vocalist CeCe Gable hails originally from Reno, Nev., and comes to us in New York City for these gigs. Her debut CD, Next Year’s Song, showcases her soulful, swinging style, surrounded by top-notch talent like pianist Alan Broadbent, producer and bassist Harvie S, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, and drummer Matt Wilson. Singing standards and some original material, CeCe has an old deep soul. Reinterpreting well-known tunes, CeCe sounds familiar, as if she's been doing this since childhood. She’s quite good at taking well-worn lyrics and making them her own. Some listeners might make favorable comparisons to the late Carmen McRae. A rising star for sure, she is in a crowded field of female vocalists, but she is off to a great start.
